For Bill Gates, the new Google Chrome for OS is a familiar face: Linux.
“There are a variety of Linux distributions on the market with variations in their design and started in different ways,” Gates said in an interview with CNET News last week. “It amazes me that people see this as something totally new. Android already exists in netbooks and mobile, and incorporates a browser. ” Gates added that really can not comment on OS Chrome Google as it unveils very little about how it works than it is a lightweight Linux kernel.
“The more ambiguous the message is more interesting is the thing,” said Gates.
Moreover, Gates said that the concept of the browser as operating system is not a new idea and that most browsers already incorporate or facilitate the installation of add-ons and plug-ins to function as an operating system.
“The only thing this shows is that the word ‘browser’ ceases to have effect, at least in its traditional meaning,” added Gates. “What is or is not a browser? If you’re watching a movie online, is it a browser or not? If you’re taking notes and making notes, is a browser or not? If you write or edit text documents, is it a browser or not? In large part, I think this is more of a change in terminology that a change in technology. ”
Also, Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, suggested that Windows, an operating system that is not based exclusively on the Web strategy is to follow. To support its argument, Ballmer said that half of all PCs used to perform offline.
“We do not need a new operating system,” Ballmer said in his opening speech at the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference held recently in New Orleans. “What I have to do is to continue the evolution of Windows, applications Windows, Internet Explorer, IE how it interacts with Windows and how to design applications like Office. And we must ensure that our partners and customers are part of this process. ”
Gates and Ballmer also added that with Chrome OS, Google has two operating systems, Android being the other. Ballmer reveals the two-OS (Windows 95 and Windows NT) did not do anything right to Microsoft. “The fact that we had Windows 95 to the user / client and Windows NT does not mean that business was good experience,” said Ballmer.
