eBay might have to put closure to the Skype not having a key patent for the operation of the VoIP service, a license that is still in the hands of the original founders.
The relationship between eBay and Skype continues to sour. The auction portal, which owns Skype for four years and in negotiations to dispose of the company in 2011, might be forced to close due to an issue of patents.
As published Channel Insider, when eBay bought Skype, the creators had Jolt Limited through a patent for key technology for voice over IP service. Apparently, the payment of 2,600 million U.S. dollars did not include the patent, but set a licensing agreement for use of payment that eBay could offer the service.
Recent rifirrafes between eBay and Jolt Limited have pushed it to withdraw the license to use, leading to the closure of the service if eBay fails to alternative technology.
